That’s a super spiffy Spider-Man costume. And man it’s definitely exciting to see a new Spidey out in the wild, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe no less.
Also, the new Captain America: Civil War trailer definitely has me intrigued about the film, even if the premise leaves me a bit underwhelmed in the same way that Batman Vs. Superman leaves me underwhelmed. Like, we know that The Avengers’ principle members will work this out in the end and all will be okay, right? Just like the Justice League is a thing and Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent are going to be good chums before the credits roll.
In any case, none of that’s the point.
The point is this: As cool as this new Spider-Man costume looks, and as exciting as it may be to finally see our favorite web-spraying hero show up in an MCU film, it’s the wrong time to make the reveal.
Oh lord what fools these marketers be.
Yes, this will drum up more hype for the movie. But Civil War was already going to be a big deal. It was already destined to make buckets and buckets of money. And really, if we’d not been privy to this reveal before the film’s opening, imagine how surprised and delighted and wonderful audiences would feel when they actually saw this for the first time while scarfing down popcorn in a dimly lit movie theater filled with noisy college students and wailing babes?
That has now been robbed from us thanks to advertising. Thanks to advertisers. Thanks to greed, and placing marketing above art, above enjoyment, above revelation, in the hierarchy of entertainment.

But sure, yeah, that Spider-Man costume is sleek. Those eyes are super cool. Why is he holding Cap’s shield? Why can’t they all just get along?
